Zombie Overload?

So not to long ago Rockstar Games announced they have new DLC coming for Red Dead Redemption.  One of those pieces of DLC will be the Undead Nightmare Pack that will include ghost towns and zombies.  This got me to thinking, are we starting to over do the zombie thing?

While it can be fun, it seems that video game companies are starting to try and put out more new games with zombies or add them to games that really didn't need them.  When Treyarch added a DLC to Call of Duty: World at War, they had a bit of a surprise hit.  While the game did fine and was great without them.  Red Dead Redemption, on the other hand, is a really good game and a big hit already-- does it need zombies?  How do they fit into the spaghetti western genre?

Some games have zombies, but are called other things.  The Flood in Halo, Crackdown 2's Freaks, Mass Effect's Husks, and the Descendants in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.  They may not have been called zombies, but they looked and sure acted like zombies.

Epicenter Games is creating a game called Rock of the Dead, a game best described as Guitar Hero meets Typing of the Dead.  Cheesy and campy with Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day doing voice overs.

So at what point is it too much?  I love a good zombie movie or video game as much as the next person, but are we over doing  it a bit?

Coming soon in the fall or early 2011 we'll see these video games or DLC ;
  • Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare Pack DLC
  • Dead Rising 2
  • Rock of the Dead
  • Dead Space 2
  • Plants vs Zombies for Xbox 360
  • Dead State, a "ZRPG"
  • Dead Nation
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops "Hardened Edition" will include "Zombie Map Pack" which is assumed Activision will put out as DLC.
  • Zombie Tactics
  • Age of Zombies (Windows 7 Phone game)
  • Zombie Attack! (Windows 7 Phone game)
  • Zombies!!!! (Windows 7 Phone game)
  • Splatterhouse
  • With a new movie coming, expect more Resident Evil games
That's just a quick scan, and while some are for specific consoles/devices at the moment, you know some of those will find their way onto other platforms (PopCap for sure will port Plants vs Zombies over to the PS3 and Wii eventually).

Are we seeing the Zombie Apocalypse, and it just happens to be in video game form?

  1. There's also these guys over at Undead Labs who are looking to make a console zombie MMO.

Being not really a fan of zombies, I can't say I'm interested, but it's probably just a fad like the pirates thing was several years ago.
