So, as usual I am late to the party on this - I have recently discovered podiobooks! What are podiobooks you ask? Why, let me tell you! Podiobooks are audiobooks released as podcasts. Clever, eh?
There is a plethora of free podiobooks available out there on teh interwebz - I have recently been devouring the Leviathan Chronicles and anything I can find by Scott Sigler. I prefer to get my podiobooks via iTunes, if only because it is mindless for me and I don't have to worry about missing an episode. I have recently heard about Podiobooks.com but haven't looked into that one yet.
I first heard of Scott Sigler on the Nerdist podcast - it was an interesting interview and I was intrigued by the idea of sci-fi / horror fiction but with a basis of real science. Scott uses science consultants to make sure his science is acurate. It took me a while to finally get around to downloading an episode of Scott's work to check it out, but as soon as I listened I was hooked.
Over the past few months I have listened to Earthcore, The Crypt, Infected, Kissyman, Contagious and The Rookie. He is still releasing chapters of Ancestor, and I have just started on that one. Scott reads the books himself, and while that was a bit weird at first I quickly became used to it.
Just a note to let you know how much I like Scott's writing - Scott describes The Rookie as "a story that combines the intense gridiron action of "Any Given Sunday" with the space opera style of "Star Wars" and the criminal underworld of "The Godfather." Now, I am NOT a football fan. I don't really understand the game, and I am not interested in learning. I have no interest in football. I got so sucked into The Rookie it's not even funny. I got so caught up in the story I would actually be tense listening to it!
Please note: Scott's works are NOT safe for work or for the squeemish / easily offended.
A friend recently recommended The Leviathan Chronicles written by Christof Laputka, which is a sci-fi audio drama performed by a cast. Season 1 has recently finished, and I am eagerly waiting for season 2 to be published! Do yourself a favour and go listen.
So, if these authors release their works for free, how to they make money? I think it is similar to the struggle webcomic creaters have - to monitize their works. Scott Sigler releases his books in print, both authors have merchandise available. But I think even telling someone else about their stuff helps! I have put Scott's books on my Christmas list. I am telling you about these podiobooks.
So, go listen! Subscribe! Tell a friend! Recommend podiobooks you enjoy in the comments below.
